"Life and Death" is the follow-up to last years's "Fire and Stone" event, which saw Dark Horse publish four different mini-series that linked the Alien, Predator and Prometheus franchises into one uber-crossover. That publishing strategy ensured that Fire and Stone became needlessly convoluted as the crossover bounced from one series to the next. It appears that same approach is being used for Life and Death. This opening chapter works a decent, if unremarkable mash-up of Alien and Predator tropes, but it doesn't build much excitement for the notion of a 17-part crossover.
This issue opens as many Alien stories have in the past, with a Weyland-Yutani crew being dispatched to a remote planet to investigate strange goings-on. The obvious twist being that when they touch down, rather than running afoul of a group of Xenomorphs our heroes instead encounter a Predator lurking in the jungle. This first issue follows a very predictable path as this mission unfolds.
