Vampirella #1 Review

Lately it seems like Dynamite relaunches Vampirella every year or two, but this time there's a good reason for it. This new series is part of Dynamite's larger efforts to spruce up their lineup of female-driven books and tone down the T&A factor in favor of quality storytelling. It's an approach that so far has worked well for Red Sonja and less so for Dejah Thoris. Fortunately, the new Vampirella is more in line with the former book.

It's easy to assume based on Christine Zullo's cover and writer Kate Leth's recent resume (Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat, Bravest Warriors) that Dynamite is going overboard and trying to give Vampirella an all-ages makeover. That's far from the case. Leth has worked on her fair share of adults-only comics as well, and she doesn't make the mistake of trying to ignore the franchise's more risque trappings. It's more an acknowledgement that there's no reason for V to wear a skimpy red thong in every waking moment of her life. There's a fondness for the character's past, and a clear desire to portray V as a confident, sexually liberated character despite her more modest new costume.
