Dark Souls #1 Review

In theory, Dark Souls is the perfect video game franchise to expand in the form of a comic book tie-in. The Dark Souls universe has a rich mythology the games only allude to in between grueling bouts of combat. And because the series is so infamous for its unforgiving difficulty level, a comic offers a lifeline for those who want to experience that mythology without throwing a controller at the television. But on its own merits, this issue doesn't offer much indication of why the Dark Souls franchise has had such a significant impact on the gaming industry.

In terms of the mythology, this issue covers ground that should be familiar to fans of the games. The kingdom of Ishra is facing a new wave of darkness, there are knights and dragons and ancient evils, etc. But tonally and stylistically, the Dark Souls comic is a poor match for the games. The art is surprisingly colorful for such a dark, Gothic fantasy universe. It's annoying that so many video game-based comics suffer from overly dull and muted color palettes, and one of the few exceptions to that rule is a case where too much color is a bad thing.
