If there's any one secret to the success of Gerry Duggan's Deadpool work, it's that he's able to blend Wade Wilson's goofy antics with a real sense of tragedy and pathos. Duggan's Deadpool is nearly always at his best when he's suffering. That's certainly been true for this current volume, which has largely been devoted to exploring just how wrong Wade's life can go even when he seems to have everything working in his favor. And as this current story arc is proving, other characters can benefit from being exposed to Wade's suffering, too.
As compelling as it is to see Deadpool confront Sabretooth in a misguided quest for revenge, this arc is quickly shaping up to be just as important on Sabretooth's end. As intriguing as the idea of a morally righteous Victor Creed is, the character has often seemed neglected in the past year. Blame Rick Remender's abrupt exit from Uncanny Avengers and Marvel's decision to emphasize X-23 and Old Man Logan as the heirs apparent to Wolverine. But at least Duggan is taking the chance to explore Victor's reformed personality and his lingering guilt over the many atrocities he committed in his long career as a savage killer.
