This review of "Through a Glass, Darkly" contains full spoilers.
The welcome back to the world of Outlander started from a very different vantage point than many people were likely expecting.
Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan) ended Season 1 on a very definitive note: in the wake of Jamie's abuse at the hands of Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies), the couple set off to Paris to try to save the future of Scottish culture from stopping the Jacobite Rebellion from ever happening. Oh, and Claire is pregnant. Happily ever after, right?
Cut to a very unhappy Claire bringing us back into Outlander. She's not in Paris, as viewers might have expected, but rather back in Scotland inside the ring of stones at Craigh na Dun -- in 1948. The season kicks off with an interesting framing device borrowed (and changed) from Diana Gabaldon's second Outlander novel, Dragonfly in Amber, that lets us know right from the top that Jamie and Claire's mission is destined to fail.
