Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of Thunderbolts #1, which will be released on Wednesday, May 4.
The Thunderbolts franchise has taken many forms over the past two decades. The only real common thread in all that time is the idea that this is a team of villains masquerading and ostensibly acting as heroes. With the latest incarnation of Thunderbolts, Marvel is bringing the franchise back to its late '90s roots. However, it's no coincidence that this first issue only succeeds when it strives to be different.
In terms of both character lineup and general visual style, this is new series is very much a '90s throwback. Moonstone, Fixer, Mach-X and Atlas are all back in the mix (and in their classic T-Bolts costumes, no less). The big difference is that the Winter Soldier, not Baron Zemo, is leading the team. This may be an ensemble series, but it's really a Bucky Barnes comic at the end of the day. Bucky is still grappling with his responsibilities as "the man on the wall" while simultaneously trying to lead a very dysfunctional team of misfits and care for Kobik, a sentient Cosmic Cube who has taken the form of a precocious, four-year-old girl.
