Norton Security Standard Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

IGN is reviewing all the biggest antivirus programs all week long. They’re evaluated based on ease of use, price, features, and a variety of testing performed by our editor and IGN’s sister-site PCMag.com for scan times, false positives, and correct identification of threats. Note that if you click on one of these links to buy the product, IGN may get a share of the sale. For more, read our Terms of Use.

Norton Antivirus is an easily recognizable name in antivirus, and has been for years. Similar to McAfee, Norton often comes pre-installed on new PCs and laptops, so many people's first exposure to Norton was after booting up a new computer for the first time. Years ago, Norton was notoriously intrusive and resource intense, leading many people to just uninstall it once the trial period ended. Antivirus software has come a long way in the last 10 years though, and Norton is a great example of its progress. No longer does antivirus bog down your computer's resources, or constantly pester you with pop-ups. To see where it stands in 2017 I tested its basic "Norton Security" package, which covers one device (PC, Mac, or mobile) for one year for $69.99, though at press time it was on sale for $34.99. It's a mid-range offering that protects against viruses, malware, and identity theft.

Boruto Episode 22 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

This week’s Boruto features the return of one of Naruto’s most infamous characters while Naruto and Sasuke search for information on the whereabouts of the kidnapped Sakura. It lacks the action of previous episodes, but is loaded with great revelations that have big implications for the rest of Sarada’s tumultuous journey.

Following their encounter with Shin, Sasuke and Naruto quickly assume that he must be a subordinate of Orochimaru’s and decide to pay his lab a visit. Upon arriving Orochimaru confirms he knows of Shin, but Sarada has other goals in mind and sets off to grill Orochimaru’s assistants about her parentage. I’m not sure if the inclusion of a maligned character like Orochimaru counts as fan-service, but there is something undoubtedly satisfying about seeing him interact with his former enemies. Despite being reduced from villain to plot device, he’s still the same gleefully wicked guy, even though Naruto and Sasuke hardly register him as a threat.

Goon: Last of the Enforcers Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

If the first Goon was “Rocky with Hockey,” then Goon: The Last Enforcer is Rocky II with hockey too. Jay Baruchel’s follow-up to the surprisingly smart, endearing and engrossing sports film is, itself, a surprisingly smart, endearing and engrossing sports sequel, full of raucous laughs but also able to wrest a few salty tears from even the most macho of audience members.

Doug Glatt (Seann William Scott) is back and he’s just been made captain of the Halifax Highlanders. Unfortunately for Doug this is the beginning of the movie, not the end, and his victory is short-lived. An altercation with rising hockey star Anders Cain (Wyatt Russell) leaves Doug with a potentially career-ending injury, right when his wife Eva (Alison Pill) discovers that she’s pregnant.

F1 2017 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

In this year’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel had a real brain snap on track, pulling up alongside rival Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes and steering into him during a safety car restart. During the Russian Grand Prix, in the first year of my F1 2017 career, he’s done something similar. He’s turned into Hamilton at race pace and managed to tangle himself, Lewis, and my F1 wunderkind Jackie Speedweasel together for a date with the wall. I manage to extract my driver from the mess, grazing the wall and losing part of the front wing in the process, but Hamilton and Vettel’s cars are toast; a snarl of carbon fibre shards and loose wheels. It’s still very early days but the championship has pivoted in an instant.

Halo: Rise of Atriox #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Dark Horse's latest foray into the Halo universe is also one geared towards the recent release of Halo Wars 2. Halo: Rise of Atriox is an anthology mini-series tasked with shedding light on the game's main villain and his rise through the Covenant ranks. The series gets its start with a efficient and action-packed first chapter, though it doesn't do a great deal to flesh out the titular villain.

Writer Cullen Bunn and artist Eric Nguyen focus on the "horrors of war" angle with this issue, hinging their story on a battered group of UNSC soldier fighting a losing battle against endless waves of Covenant troops. There's a palpable sense of desperation and futility to this conflict, enough that the reader is able to connect with these soldiers despite their general lack of distinguishing qualities. This issue is not unlike Halo: Reach in that regard, which managed to paints its Spartan leads as compelling heroes despite a minimal focus on character development. The main protagonist, Sergeant Kress, stands out especially well as she reluctantly embraces her role as commanding officer leading a group of dead men walking.

Go Go Power Rangers #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

With this new series now two issues deep, it's easier to see the symbiotic relationship Boom's two ongoing Power Rangers comics are developing. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers is all about the new, pushing these characters beyond where we saw them in the TV series and creating new challenges and threats for them to overcome. Go Go Power Rangers is more about celebrating the past and the relatively humble origins of these characters. Sure, there's plenty of superhero/giant robot spectacle to be had, but it's offset by a heavier focus on high school and family drama. It's great to see both books carving their own niche and doing it well.

Nowhere is the contrast between the two books more obvious than in the opening pages of this issue. Ryan Parrott and Dan Mora focus not on epic Ranger battles, but on a quiet, charming date between Kimberly and Matthew. Parrott has been surprisingly successful in establishing Matthew as a worthwhile addition to the cast this early on. You have to imagine a dark fate is awaiting this character, given that he's a brand new addition to a familiar cast, but at least readers will care about that fate, one way or another. The Jason/Trini dynamic also shines in this issue. As well as Parrott and Mora handle the grounded character drama, I could see myself reading this comic even if it had no actual Power Rangers trappings.

Darkseid Special #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

DC definitely saved the best for last when it comes to their Jack Kirby 100 specials. Darkseid Special #1 has two major selling points - it features Kirby's most iconic DC creation and it's written by renowned Kirby historian Mark Evanier. The end result is a comic that effortlessly evokes the classic New Gods stories in tone and style.

Though Darkseid is ostensibly the star of "The Resistance," Evanier keeps the ruler of Apokolips at a distance for much of this story. This is probably the wisest course of action. Darkseid is not a character who's easily humanized, nor does he necessarily benefit from that treatment in the first place. Instead, Evanier's script focuses mainly on a small, ragtag resistance cell led by a woman named Makayla. As much as Fourth World tales tend to focus on the larger-than-life conflicts between the New Gods themselves, it's always interesting to catch a glimpse of how the average Joe fares on Apokolips.

Gigantic Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Its huge monsters put on a great and imposing show, but Gigantic is really all about making its action-MOBA gameplay accessible. Its characters challenge, but they’re not ultra demanding. Its multi-phase battles require strategy and teamwork, but you don’t have to be a master tactician to succeed. It takes time to learn, but we’re talking weeks instead of months. The drawback is that its short, rapid-fire matches risk retreading the same ground a bit too often.

There’s currently only one way to play Gigantic: a 5v5 battle where teams must gather energy to power the massive monsters that sit on either side of the arena. These Guardians are far more interesting than ordinary MOBA objectives because they’re active participants rather than stationary punching bags, and the few times they battle each other during a match are always exciting. Watching one swoop in from its perch, wrestle its rival to the ground, and expose the weak point for its team to attack is really cool, and I wished they’d spend more time in action instead of holding back.

Star Wars: Mace Windu #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Marvel's various Star Wars mini-series have generally struggled to meet the standard of the various ongoing books like Jason Aaron's Star Wars and Kieron Gillen and Salvador Larroca's Darth Vader. For the most part, they tend to offer forgettable side-stories in a familiar character's early career. Jedi of the Republic: Mace Windu looks to be no different in that regard. This new series has it charms, but seems to offer little we haven't seen from the numerous other Clone Wars-focused projects of the past 15 years.

If anything, Mace Windu #1 plays out like the opening segment of an early episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with Master Windu being tasked to lead a small band of Jedi Knights behind enemy lines on a critical mission for the Republic. There's little to set this generic premise apart. And while writer Matt Owens introduces a mildly interesting villain very late in the game, the scope of the conflict seems very small and unremarkable at this early stage. If Marvel is going to publish a Mace Windu comic, why not explore the character's early life, before he acquired his coveted Jedi Master title?

Dragon Ball Super Episode 105 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

It’s all about Master Roshi this week as the Tournament of Power continues onwards. I had reservations going into the episode as Master Roshi’s depiction in Dragon Ball Super has been fumbled a few times recently. By the end, those concerns had vanished as Master Roshi ended up being the centerpiece of a phenomenal episode that ended with a tear-inducing moment.

I was alarmed to see Episode 105 fall back on Master Roshi’s urges when around women. Thankfully, it took a sharp right turn and made it clear that Roshi is finally able to control these impulses, allowing him to properly confront and beat the female warrior from Universe 4. This evolution for Master Roshi has been a long time coming, and it’s great to see the Super team putting Roshi’s perverted antics behind him. There may have been a time where they were funny, but his perverted behavior doesn’t fit in with Dragon Ball Super’s direction.

Secret Empire #10 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

With the release of this tenth and final issue, Secret Empire can officially be filed away with the rest of Marvel's lackluster, unfulfilling event comics. It's not like there haven't been other disappointments since Secret Wars set the new gold standard in 2015. But what makes Secret Empire frustrating is that it started out so well, and even as recently as two issues ago still showed signs that it would ultimately live up to its promise. Sadly, it just wasn't to be.

Above all, Secret Empire #10 disappoints because it gives readers exactly what they were expecting and nothing more. The conflict between Supreme Hydra Steve Rogers and the Avengers unfolds in very predictable fashion. Granted, there are some memorable moments along the way. Ant-Man still shines under Nick Spencer's hand, and it's certainly a thrill seeing the classic Steve Rogers reassert himself at long last. But those moments don't do nearly enough to make this issue into the rousing, exciting conclusion it needs to be. After so much build-up, Secret Empire becomes just another superhero crossover that boils down to a simple fistfight between heroes and villain.

Kingdomino Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Kingdomino doesn’t make a striking first impression. It comes off as nothing more than a run-of-the-mill tile-laying game with an unassuming art style and simple mechanics. But you don’t take home the Spiel des Jahres, Germany’s coveted board game of the year award, by being run-of-the-mill. We named it one of the Best Board Games of 2017, too. After spending more time with it, playing several times at all player counts, I can say with confidence that Kingdomino has rightfully earned its place among the year’s best games.

The premise is simple: two to four players take turns choosing tiles (the game calls them dominoes) and adding them to your kingdom. Each domino has one or two different landscapes that, when placed next to other tiles of the same landscape, form a property. At the end of the game, each property is scored based on how big it is, multiplied by the number of crowns in it. For example, a forest property with six squares and two crowns is worth 12 points.

The Deuce: Pilot Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

HBO has made the first episode of The Deuce available on its streaming services ahead of its Sept. 10th air date.

HBO's The Deuce is executive producers David Simon and George Pelecanos's (The Wire, Treme) latest saga about an urban ecosystem where disparate members of a community -- in this case, Times Square in 1971 -- struggle to survive against the forces, both institutional and personal, that threaten to swarm them. It is, as to be expected from Simon and HBO on their sixth pairing, an ambitious, sprawling, slow burn affair, one marked by a great ensemble cast and a journalist's insight into urban socioeconomics and human behavior.

Absolver Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The second I traded blows with Jinn Mesca, so-called Prime Disciple of the Golden Bottle, I knew I wanted to be like him. Absolver’s "drunken master" warded off my blows and landed his own while swaying like a man fresh off a bender, punching me lightly even when I thought I'd successfully dodged. I returned to Jinn several times at his perch beneath a large tree until I’d learned all his moves and, in time, could beat him at his own game. I became the drunken master, and if Jinn had been a player instead of an NPC, I know I could have taught him a few moves myself. This master/apprentice relationship makes each fight in this action-roleplaying game a learning experience, and the idea meshes well with the surreal martial arts vibe woven throughout Absolver.

Preacher: "Backdoors" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

This isn't the first time I've said this, but it really doesn't feel like Preacher has benefited at all from the larger episode count in Season 2. The series can't seem to deliver more than two great episodes in a row before its falls victim to poor pacing and loses its sense of focus. That case struck yet again with "Backdoors," an episode that featured some strong elements but did little to advance the season's often sluggish narrative momentum.

Season 2 has generally been at its weakest whenever the focus shifts to Eugene and the Hell subplot. So it was pretty much inevitable that this episode would suffer now that Eugene is back in the spotlight. The Hell setting has by now lost all its novelty, and even Eugene's unlikely friendship with Hitler feels stale. The fact that so much time was spent rehashing and expanding on Hitler's personal nightmare room didn't exactly help. I only care about Eugene's struggle inasmuch as I want to know what happens when he inevitably escapes and returns to hold Jesse to account. And at the rate things are going, that showdown doesn't seem likely until Season 3.

Rememory Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Rememory is now for free for a limited time on Google Play and in theaters September 8th.

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage currently has a new feature length film on Google Play that you can watch for free. All it will cost to see Rememory is nearly two hours of your time...but that is something that you’re probably going to want back.

Director Mark Palansky co-wrote Rememory with Michael Vukadinovich, and there are some intriguing ideas about memories within the film. There’s even a way to monetize memories through the use of “the Machine,” which is literally what the device is called in the movie. Dinklage plays Sam Bloom, a man who is haunted by the death of his brother and his inability to recall or understand his last words. Gordon Dunn (Martin Donovan)’s Machine could help Sam remember, and Gordon’s apparent murder leaves Sam with the chance to use the Machine on himself and others. But out of a sense of debt to Gordon, Sam attempts to find his killer.

Rick and Morty: "Rest and Ricklaxation" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

It's been a rough season for everyone on Rick and Morty, and you can't blame the titular duo for needing a vacation. Predictably, these two can't even go to a simple day spa without things going horribly wrong. That ill-fated vacation paved the way for a very classical and character-driven episode, even if the central conceit didn't seem 100% ironed out.

"Rest and Ricklaxation" isn't the first time we've seen an episode revolve around Rick and Morty confront their doppelgangers, but leave it to Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon and the writers room to consistently find new spins on familiar formulas. Only Rick Sanchez's dark side would be strong enough and ambitious enough to take physical form and attempt to replace his good self.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is an unanticipated game that’s full of surprises. Its XCOM-style, turn-based tactics gameplay is just about the last thing I’d have expected from either Mario or Rabbids, but it’s absurdist charm works against the odds and it’s far more difficult and meatier than you probably think. When you break it down, a lot of the challenge comes down to pure trial and error, but the moment of figuring out its tactical puzzles and chaining together a string of attacks delivers a strong shot of satisfaction.

The bizarre story that brings Ubisoft’s Rabbids into the Mushroom Kingdom of Nintendo’s Mario and literally mashes them together embraces the fact that it’s complete nonsense on every level and just rolls with it. I couldn’t help but think of the plot of The Fly as a sci-fi gadget merged unwitting denizens of Mario’s universe with an unintentional interdimensional invasion of idiot rabbit-things. There are some decent jokes that arise from the slurry, including at least one Game of Thrones reference, and a lot is owed to the Rabbids’ almost entirely physical comedy. I don’t understand why the eight-character roster includes both normal and only vaguely related Rabbid-ized versions of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi, but I accepted it because of the humor. That said, I don’t think I’ll ever be totally okay with seeing those characters shoot enemies with guns (ranging from a knockoff of Mega Man’s arm cannon to straight-up shotguns and Gattling guns) when I’m accustomed to seeing them shoot fireballs from white-gloved hands, but other than that it’s the good kind of dumb fun.

Birth of the Dragon Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: there are minor spoilers ahead for Birth of the Dragon.

Birth of the Dragon is not the Bruce Lee biopic you’ve been waiting for, as strong performances and martial arts action by Philip Ng and Xia Yu are wasted on a movie that had too little faith in the real story.

In 1965, martial arts icons Bruce Lee and Wong Jack Man had a private match away from the public that became legendary, even though neither man agreed upon the outcome. Director George Nolfi’s Birth of the Dragon is very loosely inspired by that chapter of their history. But the movie itself is being marketed in a way that misrepresents the finished film. If we were to judge by the posters of Philip Ng as Lee, it would be easy to believe that this is a Bruce Lee biopic. That’s not what this is, and the movie treats Lee as if he is only the third most important character in his own story.

Boruto Episode 21 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: The following review has full spoilers for the episode.

This week’s episode of Boruto brings us the long-awaited reunion of Sarada and Sasuke, though it doesn’t go quite as swimmingly as she had hoped. Their father-daughter story continues to move at a satisfying pace, featuring some superb characterization in the opening minutes. Pair that with a compelling ending battle, and “Sasuke and Sarada” quickly cements itself as one of Boruto’s best episodes.

Following a quick recap, the episode picks back up with Sasuke threatening the frightened Sarada. Upon realizing his mistake Sasuke’s demeanor doesn’t change, and instead he coldly rebuffs her questions. She angrily storms off, and before Sasuke can attempt to make things right, they are confronted by the mysterious Shin Uchiha. Keeping up with last week’s pace, this episode moves briskly between these key scenes with almost no downtime. The opening scene between Sasuke and Sarada is without a doubt one of the series best so far. The painful subject matter, Sasuke’s indifference, and Sarada’s tearful outburst feels more realistic than anything Boruto or even Sumire’s stories could muster.

Even with its procedural maps, XCOM 2’s missions started feeling a little stale after a hundred hours or so. Enter War of The Chosen, a large-scale expansion which grafts on more than enough new variables to give that creeping sense of predictability a brutal beatdown.

Variety is War of the Chosen’s biggest strength, and its long list of changes was very successful at making me rethink my established tactics. There are several new mission types, including clever new spins on Alien Supply Raids and Retaliations (the latter finally includes armed resistance soldiers who help you fight off the attackers – a little too effectively sometimes), extracting captured XCOM soldiers, assassinating Advent generals who’ll flee to extraction points when you break concealment, evading ambushes, saving VIPs from zombie hordes, and more. Few of them rely on do-or-die turn-timers, which was a good call on Firaxis’ part. I don’t mind the occasional timed mission, but we have enough of those already.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #18 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers presents a much more difficult challenge than your average licensed comic. It can be a real juggling act to capture that sense of childlike wonder that came with watching the original TV series back in the '90s while also crafting a more complex and narrative-driven comic. It's no longer enough to simply pit the Rangers against one Rita Repulsa-spawned monster after another and call it a day. Fortunately, writer Kyle Higgins and artist Hendry Prasetya have been up to the challenge, and that hasn't changed as they move deeper into their next major conflict.

This new storyline is developing into a surprisingly dark affair, both in terms of tone and literally in terms of lighting. This issue drags the Rangers into a new mission in a remote village in Eastern Europe, one that holds a few fantastical secrets. The result is a nicely action-oriented counterpoint to issue #17, and one that gives pretty much every Ranger a brief moment or two to shine during the course of battle. You have to appreciate Zach's sense of humor, even if none of his teammates do.

Edge of Venomverse #5 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Marvel's Edge of Venomverse miniseries wraps with what is easily its most marketable mashup of Venom symbiote and popular hero - Venompool. Having Orc Stain artist James Stokoe on board doesn't hurt. This issue looks great, but the lack of anything resembling a compelling storyline might still make it a tough sell for many readers.

One problem this issue faces is that we've already seen a Deadpool/Venom mash-up thanks to 2015's Deadpool's Secret Secret Wars and its follow-up, Deadpool: Back in Black. Those two books had a lot of fun with the premise and actually found depth in the pairing, suggesting that Deadpool is responsible for driving the symbiote mad in the first place. This Venompool characters is comparatively straightforward.  He's Deadpool with some added super-powers. This isn't the first Edge of Venomverse comic where the lead character barely changes at all after bonding with the symbiote, but that lack of storytelling ambition never ceases to frustrate.

Madden NFL 18: Final Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Ask Tom Brady and Matt Ryan what they think about halftime adjustments. Those adjustments, major or minor, are the key to winning any football game – the types of championship-caliber adjustments we hoped for from Madden’s move to the Frostbite Engine in Madden NFL 18. The engine has enhanced the graphics dramatically and added an immense amount of detail to the absolutely wonderful Longshot story mode, but EA Sports misses the opportunity to really make its mark by refreshing the gameplay in meaningful ways.

While playing a rematch of last season’s Patriots vs. Falcons Super Bowl, it was easy to get distracted by the lighting effects and the improved body types, which, to my eye, have both taken the largest leap of any of Madden 18’s graphical upgrades. While watching a replay I noticed details like how the glimmer of the sun flickered off of a receiver’s helmet, and even while referees are announcing penalties you can see that the glare in their faces is real.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra Annual #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Kieron Gillen has built up quite an impressive cast of new Star Wars creations over the past three years. This standalone issue allows Gillen and guest artists Marc Laming and Will Sliney to explore the murky past of Aphra's oversized enforcer, Black Krrsantan. The result isn't an essential addition to the ongoing series, but a fun romp all the same.

Thankfully, Gillen doesn't make the mistake of trying too hard to humanize Krrsantan. There's no tragic tale of a kindly Wookiee family man losing his wife and children or any of that. Instead, the theme of this issue revolves more around how that bloodlust has lurked within Krrsantan from the beginning, even before he became a cybernetically enhanced bounty hunter. Gillen certainly provides valuable insight into what motivates Krrsantan and his peculiar sense of Wookiee morality. But never does this issue try to suggest Krrsantan is anything other than a criminal and a killer. Some characters don't need to be more complicated than that.

Nightwing: The New Order #1 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

It's easy to draw comparisons between Nightwing: The New Order and Marvel's Secret Empire. Both mini-series deal with a beloved hero turning against their allies and helping to usher in a new world order. But this series is less concerned with the hows and whys of Nightwing's fall from grace than it is in simply telling a dark, character-driven story that wouldn't be possible in the regular DCU. As such, it's well worth a read for fans of all things Dick Grayson.

Essentially an Elseworlds tale, The New Order unfolds in a futuristic DCU where a middle-aged Dick Grayson is responsible for eliminating the vast majority of the world's superhuman population. As Dick sees it, he's making the world a safer place for the ordinary, human residents of the DCU. But there's a thin line between security and fascism, and Dick increasingly finds himself on the wrong side of that line as this issue unfolds. As much as this series also brings to mind the world of Injustice: Gods Among Us, Dick makes for a more conflicted and relatable protagonist than that version of Superman ever could be.

Dragon Ball Super Episode 104 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: The following review contains spoilers for the episode.

Universe 10 is gone, but the Tournament of Power must continue; this week we get to see Hit and Goku work together to take on the powerhouse that is Universe 11. Things start off rather slow, with long scenes and little dialogue. All that turns around in the second half of the episode as the action ramps up and Hit shows off why he’s one of the best warriors in Universe 6.

Unfortunately this episode begins rather slow. There are long pauses, slow transitions and a general lack of action on screen. It’s clear that the team behind Super was trying to build tension, but took things a bit too far. If these poorly paced moments had only happened once or twice, the issue wouldn’t have been so pronounced but over the course of several minutes it continued to happen. It started to feel as if they were just padding the episode. Setting the mood of a fight is important, but taking several minutes to do so and in a manner that’s wholly uninteresting is not an enjoyable way to go about it.

Gigabyte Aorus GeForce GTX 1060 6G 9Gbs Mini-Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

When Nvidia launched the GTX 1080 Ti one of its big features is that it had slightly faster DDR5X memory than the card's that came before it, namely the GTX 1080. Since Nvidia had figured out a method for making its current stock of memory operate at a higher frequency, it also announced it was going to be upgrading the memory for the GTX 1060 as well, going from 8Gb/s to 9Gb/s across all models. This allows Nvidia partners like Gigabyte to sell both versions of the card, with nothing changed aside from the memory speed.

So we decided to do a quick review of this new card to see what the fuss is about, and to figure out if it's really a significant boost over the vanilla version of the entry-level GPU. The card I'm looking at is Gigabyte's midrange Aorus model, the 1060 6G 9Gbs (See it on Amazon). The card has an MSRP of $299, but can often be hard to find at that price. Nevertheless, I was curious to see how the upgraded card fares against the previous version of this GPU. Since nothing else has changed I won't bother rehashing the GTX 1060 review we already published - be sure to take a look for an in-depth look at the card's specs, design, overclocking capability, and more.

Secret Empire #9 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

In my review of Secret Empire #8, I suggested that "Secret Empire won't be the sort of conflict that falls apart in the final stretch." Now I'm wondering if I was too optimistic in that assessment. As much as the penultimate chapter attempts to offer a rousing look at Marvel's heroes rallying against a common enemy, it ultimately falls pretty flat. This is the sort of bland, action and banter-heavy issue that's all too common in Marvel's event comics.

To be sure, there's a certain amount of appeal in seeing Marvel's heroes triumph and unite for a change. The tone of the series has definitely taken a lighter turn in the last couple installments. But too often, this issue plays out as a jumbled mess of characters jockeying for space as the battle between the Avengers grows increasingly chaotic. Key moments for characters like Thor and Vision are essentially drowned out in all the white noise.

Telltale's Guardians of the Galaxy Episode 3 Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

The middle chapter of Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy series feels like a long windup to a single, meaningful punch. Very little of consequence to the plot takes place until the very last sequence, in which you’re asked to make probably the most momentous decision so far. It’s a pivotal point for everything that came before and likely will come after, but of the 90 minutes in this episode, most of it isn’t terribly exciting.

After Peter Quill and Rocket took their turns in episodes 1 and 2, Episode 3: More Than a Feeling puts the sisters Gamora and Nebula in the spotlight for a brief flashback mission from when they were both still in Thanos’ service. It injects some quicktime action into the script by having powerful characters briefly bash on generic Kree mooks, but there’s not much in the way of meaningful stakes, so it falls flat. Playing through the events first from Gamora’s perspective and then from Nebula’s reveals some details each character had that the other didn’t, casting their motivations and attitudes toward each other in a different light. But the writing just didn’t connect with the same emotional weight as previous episodes, and there was a clear, seemingly correct answer to resolve it all, rather than presenting a difficult choice.

Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars is now available on Digital HD and hits 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, Blu-ray and DVD September 19.

Warning: there are minor spoilers ahead for Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars.

Twenty years ago, director Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers brought Robert A. Heinlein’s classic sci-fi novel to the big screen with style and flare. It was far from a perfect movie, but it was very enjoyable. However, the subsequent Starship Troopers films have all been direct-to-video, and none of them have ever come close to matching the first movie in terms of quality.

In theory, Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars could have been the perfect way to revitalize the franchise. The writer of the first film, Edward Neumeier, penned the new movie as well, and two of the original cast members provided their voices. Casper Van Dien reprised his role as Johnny Rico, while Dina Meyer returned as Dizzy Flores. Starship Troopers viewers may recall that Dizzy lost her life in the original movie, so her return was unexpected. There is an explanation for Dizzy’s appearance in this story that really works, and the emotional connection between Rico and Dizzy is actually the best part of the entire thing. Their shared history comes across, and the tragedy of Dizzy’s fate is felt within all of her scenes. Unfortunately, she’s only around for only a few minutes of screentime.

Preacher: "Dirty Little Secret" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The overarching question with AMC's Preacher is less whether Jesse Custer will ultimately find God and discover why humanity has been forsaken, and more whether he'll like the answers he receives in the end. If "Dirty Little Secret" is any indication, the answer will be a resounding "No." Even as Jesse's quest received a much-needed jolt of momentum, our hero got a stark reminder that he lives in a very deranged and darkly comical universe.

One thing this series has really mastered over the past two seasons is the art of the cold open. I get a constant kick out of the disorienting approach the writers take with these opening scenes, throwing viewers in the deep end and leaving them to slowly grow accustomed to the unfamiliar surroundings and piece together the connections to the larger narrative. This week's opening scene was especially memorable it featured such an anachronistic take on Jesus Christ. For several minutes it wasn't even clear what time period that scene was taking place in, much less whom these characters were. I actually assumed we were seeing younger versions of Jesse's parents at first. And once it became clear that we were seeing Jesus losing his virginity shortly before the crucifixion, the vague setting and wildly anachronistic dialogue became all the more amusing.

Leap! Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

At first glance, the new film Leap! feels like an empowering story of an orphan making her dreams a reality. It is the late 19th century in France, and our heroine, Félicie (Elle Fanning), wants nothing so much as to escape from her orphanage and to be a dancer. As the film unspools, we watch her successes and failures as she pursues her dream.

Upon closer examination, however, the tale of empowerment is not a terribly strong one. At one moment in the film directed by Eric Summer and Eric Warin, Félicie is perfectly willing to abandon her best friend, Victor (Nat Wolff), at the orphanage as she tries a solo escape. The two appear to have an agreement to break out together, but Félicie is willing to cast him aside if she feels as though the opportunity is right. Later, in order to attend the ballet school, Félicie steals an admission letter and lies about her identity to use the letter.

The Alienware brand is synonymous with pre-built gaming desktops and laptops, so it's a bit surprising the company has never ventured into the realm of monitors. That's about to change with the release of its very first gaming monitor; the Alienware 25 (See it on Dell.com). For its initial foray the company has decided to take direct aim at the eSports market with a blisteringly fast 24.5-inch TN panel with an outrageous 240hz refresh rate, making it ideal for fast-paced, twitch gaming. The company is offering two versions; one with AMD's FreeSync (AW2518HF), and one with Nvidia's G-Sync functionality (AW2518H), and of course the G-Sync version, which I am reviewing here, costs $200 more. It features a slick, futuristic aesthetic that's likely to appeal to fans of the brand, but its 1920x1080 resolution and whopping $600 price tag may place it just out of reach for anyone but die-hard enthusiasts and eSports professionals.

One For All has been shrouded in mystery ever since we first learned about the Quirk in Season 1, and "Listen Up!! A Tale from the Past" finally pulls back the curtain on the peculiar power. This episode delivers an exciting revelation that offers new insight into the terrifying threat Deku and his pals will undoubtedly have to contend with in the episodes to come.

I'm continually impressed by My Hero Academia's excellent writing, which truly shines during All Might's chat with Deku. Upon learning about All For One, an incredible evil that has persisted for generations, and that he, the inheritor of One For All, will have to be the one to take down this villainous foe, Deku doesn't hesitate before exclaiming that he's up to the challenge. Twin Peaks: "Part 15" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

This week's Twin Peaks, as we close in now on the final few episodes, hit us with some more Fire Walk with Me excellence, a handful of sublime weirdness, a moment that looked like a true (and shocking) turning point for Dougie/Coop, and a heavy emotional farewell to Margaret the Log Lady - as well as actress Catherine E. Coulson, who filmed these revival scenes while she was actually dying back in 2015. Coulson lost her battle with cancer shortly after she finished.

For what was basically a simple phone scene (like most of Margaret's moments this year), both Coulson and Michael Horse were excellent, bringing stoic weight to Margaret's kindness and fear. She was passing. She was changing, and she wasn't too proud to admit that she held fear about "letting go." The moment wasn't about story so much as it was just a profound moment of sadness and grace - though Margaret still managed to slip in an item or two about the moon and Blue Pine Mountain.

Yakuza Kiwami Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Ten years ago, Sega introduced us to Kazuma Kiryu, a badass ex-Yakuza who keeps getting sucked back into the world of Japan’s underground organized crime. Yakuza Kiwami is a trip back to Kiryu’s first adventure, complete with all-new visuals, a restored Japanese dub, and gameplay enhancements that bring it nearly up to the level of more recent Yakuza games. While it’s a great way to re-experience how the Yakuza saga began, Yakuza Kiwami also showcases just how much the Yakuza series has improved since that original outing.

While the riveting crime drama story of Kazuma Kiryu emerging from a prison stint after taking the fall for a friend remains the same as the original Yakuza, the details on the character models and backgrounds have been completely reworked to look on par with other Yakuza games on the PS4. That gives Kiwami a cinematic feel that helped me get into the twists and turns of its betrayals and action. The graphical upgrade also helps Kamurocho feel more vibrant and alive as a recreation of a bustling Japanese nightlife area, Tokyo’s neon-lit Kamurocho, and is packed with attention to detail (including real-life brands and stores). The distinct feel of the Japanese setting is one of the most appealing parts of the Yakuza series, and Kiwami continues to nail it.

Rick and Morty: "The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

There's a strong case to be made for the idea that Jerry is the best character in Rick and Morty. There's something about that combination of his purity of heart and his utter lack of intelligence or anything resembling a spine. With that in mind, the biggest misstep in the otherwise enjoyable Season 3 has been the surprising lack of focus on Jerry. We've seen a lot of attention devoted to how the rest of the Smith clan is coping with the Beth/Jerry divorce, but not Jerry himself. But as Rick happily exclaimed in the opening scene of this episode, "It's a Rick and Jerry adventure!" And that adventure didn't disappoint.

I often get the sense from watching this season that Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon have taken the core Rick/Morty dynamic about as far as they care to. You still have the occasional episode like last week's "Vindicators 3" that follows the traditional "Rick and Morty go on an adventure that spirals out of control" formula, but more and more often they tend to shake things up, either by throwing another Smith family member into the mix or rethinking what a Rick and Morty adventure actually entails. This has played a huge part in the show's ability to remain fresh and unpredictable well into Season 3.

Game of Thrones: "Beyond the Wall" Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Full spoilers for Game of Thrones' Season 7 episode, "Beyond the Wall," continue below.

Game of Thrones has long set the precedent that its penultimate episodes of its seasons would be the biggest in terms of scale and, oftentimes, loss, in everything from "Baelor" to "The Rains of Castamere." In that way, "Beyond the Wall" was no different, as it arguably featured the greatest loss the series has faced to date: a dragon killed by the Night King, and even worse, resurrected by him.

But "Beyond the Wall" also suffers more than any other episode to date from the rushed, truncated storytelling in Season 7. Despite the incredible action sequences and solid performances from the stars, this week's episode hurdled headlong through major plot developments without time to let them breathe or let their stakes become clear. Heck, the episode doesn't even make it evident which dragon died beyond it clearly not being Drogon. (Spoiler: It's Viserion.)

StarCraft Remastered Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Imagine that you could actually buy a working pair of those fabled rose-colored glasses people are always talking about. Booting up StarCraft Remastered isn’t too far off from living that nostalgia fantasy. It takes an all-time classic RTS and makes it look like my fond memories of it, rather than how it actually looked. Other than that, the amazing campaign and competitive gameplay are almost completely unchanged, which is exactly what the esports community wants, but slightly annoying for casual players accustomed to modern conveniences like working pathfinding AI.

When I say StarCraft Remastered looks really good, I don’t need to qualify that with: “Good for a 19-year-old game.” Blizzard’s art team has created units and maps that are about as detailed as I could hope for from a sprite-based isometric style. Even common units like Marines pop against the background, easily mistakable for full 3D models in their shining, bulbous armor. Zooming in - which is now a thing you can do! - lets you count the spines on a hydralisk’s head. Modifications to how terrain is rendered give a depth and sense of place to aged maps. And with Dynamic Lighting turned on, the glow effect on an archon’s attacks actually casts light on nearby units.

Marvel's The Defenders Episode 8: The Defenders Review

The latest game news from IGN - one of my fave channels ever - check it out

Warning: Contains spoilers for the episode. Do not read unless you've seen it or don't mind.

The Defenders sadly concludes with a deeply confused and confusing finale. The plot almost entirely crumbles in its homestretch, with the final set-piece riddled with plot holes, tedious repetition, and forgettable fight sequences. It’s all the more disappointing after the show offering up a couple of enjoyable episodes, and demonstrating these character definitely have chemistry, but this was far from the finale I was hoping for.

Where to begin? There’s a lot to dissect.

Firstly, I can’t believe the conclusion of The Defenders – Marvel’s street-level heroes, who supposedly protect the city from murderers, rapists, paedophiles, and drug dealers – takes place within the skeleton of a dead dragon in a secret subterranean cave that could only be opened by the Iron Fist.
