Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
The big question with each new season of South Park is how the series will handle its own continuity. Clearly, Trey Parker and Matt Stone have shifted away from the heavily serialized approach we saw in 2015 and 2016, but it's still fun to see the various ways in which new episodes build on what's come before. "The Boys Are Missing" hints as to the changing approach with Season 22. This new episode builds very effectively on a previous South Park installment, albeit one that first aired 16 years ago.
Essentially, this week's episode turned out to be a direct sequel to 2002's "Red Hot Catholic Love," which itself was one of the early examples of how timely South Park can be. It's incredibly depressing that the subject of sex abuse in the Catholic Church is just as topical and urgent now as it was then, but there you have it.
