This is an early, spoiler-free review for Syfy's Nightflyers, which premiered its first episode at New York Comic Con. The show will debut on Dec. 2 on Syfy.
A child’s arm outstretched. The cheery whistle of an ax-wielding man. A video call that buffers and disconnects at the wrong moment. Although the series premiere of Syfy’s Nightflyers is filled with thrilling moments (along with a few too many predictable beats), it’s these smaller, more subtly unnerving elements that hint at a promising horror show.
Nightflyers takes place in 2093 and follows a team of scientists aboard the eponymous spaceship, on a mission to save a dying Earth. In the hope of finding a potential new home, the crew is attempting to connect with a more advanced alien species that has so far proven elusive, but first contact is rife with potential dangers – not least of which is the lingering question of whether the extraterrestrials will be receptive to a human alliance, or hostile. Making matters worse is the divisive presence of a powerful telepath, Thale (Sam Strike), who has been brought on board to try and communicate with the aliens, but who might also be sowing discord and paranoia amongst the crew.
