Venom is the clear favorite for Marvel's most improved ongoing series in 2018. There's a pretty strong case to be made for it being Marvel's best ongoing series in general right now. But Venom still faces one important test in issue #7. Can the book retain its full appeal when artist Ryan Stegman isn't handling the interior art? Unfortunately, the answer seems to be "not quite."
Not that Iban Coello's work isn't impressive in its own right. It's more a question of having to follow up on one of the most visually stunning Venom storylines ever published. Coello's work is a bit more subdued by comparison. It's definitely expressive and powerful, but his line-work doesn't quite tick all the same boxes when it comes to capturing the vibe of classic '90s-era Venom. It doesn't help that writer Donny Cates takes a more dialogue-driven approach this time around, only giving Coello a handful of scenes in which to really explore the strength and fury of the symbiote. Assuming the action picks up in future chapters, Coello might have more opportunity to stand out and leave his own mark on the series.
