GameStop enters publishing business with Insomniac's Song of the Deep

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

Insomniac Games announced its latest title, Song of the Deep, today, but along with the announcement, we learned GameStop will be be its publisher, making this a first for the well-known video game retailer.

GameStop’s publishing of Song of the Deep is more a test than it is an official debut for the company as it isn’t committed to becoming a full-fledged publisher yet. Instead, it’s dipping its toe into the publishing waters by partnering with Insomniac Games’ passion project.

"I think this will work because we've both been in the games industry for a long time," said Insomniac Games President and CEO Ted Price. "There's a lot of trust involved. They trust us to shepherd our creative vision and make the best possible game. That's not always the case with traditional publisher-developer relationships."

Price notes even though Insomniac and GameStop have entered in a publishing agreement, the development studio retains complete creative control over Song of the Deep.

As a result of this publishing deal, GameStop will have physical exclusive rights to Song of the Deep in its stores when the game is published in Q2 2016. Those who prefer to purchase their games digitally will be able to do so as the game will be available on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam for $14.99.
