The Mighty Thor #6 Review

The last issue of The Mighty Thor ended in about as calamitous a way possible, with a not-so-lawfully attended wedding, a throne room throwdown, and backstabbing both literal and figurative. Rather than delve further into the turmoil that is Keeping Up With The Asgardians, Jason Aaron instead opts to take a detour through times long past as a way of further enhancing the book’s impending future. Joined by guest artist Rafa Garres, the resulting read offers a solid, if familiar, tale of history and betrayal, offering just enough thunder god action to sate readers eagerly waiting for the main narrative’s return.

Aaron kicks off the interlude with a meeting of minds most foul. Dario Agger, fresh off some realm pillaging, has some reservations in regards to the alliance he now shares with Malekith and his ilk. He relays this mistrust to the totally trustful Loki and asks for his assistance, the god in turn sharing a tale of another time his aid was requested. Thus kicks off the story of Bodolf the Black, a Viking chieftain with naught but blood on his axe and power on his mind. Aaron positions Bodolf as a man of immense pride and hunger, using the Viking’s own success against him. He does so by utilizing a character we haven’t seen in a while, namely Mjolnir’s future/former bearer, the still young and two-armed Odinson of 896 A.D. Bodolf gives his prayers to the Thunder God in exchange for victory, yet despite his many battles won, his eventual vanity begets all mortal reason and eventually sees him laid to ruin.
