Klaus and the Crisis in Xmasville #1 Review

I approve of this trend of Grant Morrison and Dan Mora reuniting every year for a conveniently timed Klaus one-shot. Nor is Klaus and the Crisis in Xmasville a simple little holiday jaunt. It's a bold, ambitious story that crams an awful lot of heart, wit and world-building into one 50-page tale. It's as though the creators crammed an entire miniseries' worth of material into one issue.

The Klaus saga takes a turn for the meta here as the setting shifts to 1985 and the the efforts of the Pola-Cola corporation to seize control of the X-Mas holiday and the image of Santa Claus himself. Throw in some forced child labor and a war between Klaus and his Bizarro Universe self and you've got a good, old-fashioned Grant Morrison comic on your hands. It's got all the high-concept storytelling, weird humor and heartfelt character work one could ask for. Morrison crafts a very dense narrative, but one that flows cleanly and easily from start to finish. Impressively enough, this issue functions pretty well as a standalone story, not requiring any prior experience with the franchise.
