While the aged Wolverine of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven's Old Man Logan has found a new home in the Marvel Universe, many would argue the setting in that story was more compelling than the character himself. Marvel is basically putting that theory to the test with Old Man Hawkeye, a prequel maxi-series that spotlight's Logan's doomed road trip partner. The first issue does immediately tap into the appeal of this dystopian, sun-bleached Marvel landscape, but beyond that, Old Man Hawkeye struggles to establish a clear sense of purpose.
The good news is that, despite the absence of both Millar and McNiven, this prequel has no trouble capturing the look and feel of the original Old Man Logan. With the current Old Man Logan comic, artist Andrea Sorrentino established a much more surreal take on this alternate world. Marco Checchetto, by comparison, sticks closer to McNiven's example, emphasizing powerful, detailed figures and a generally gritty texture. That pairs well with Andres Mossa's colors, which give the book a washed-out, haggard feel very much in keeping with the tone of this world. It's tough to think of another Marvel art team better suited to picking up where McNiven, Dexter Vines and Maury Hollowell left off all those years ago.
