The End of the F***ing World: Season 1 Review

This is a SPOILER-FREE review of Netflix’s The End of the F***ing World: Season 1.

Netflix’s latest British import, The End of the F***ing World, is a brilliant dark comedy that should not be missed. The series is a masterclass in its exploration of teen angst, set against the backdrop of what is seemingly the ideal town to raise a family in. James (Alex Lawther) and Alyssa’s (Jessica Barden) search for companionship throughout the season is heartwarming -- even when they’re acting like horrible people.

TeotFW succeeds in its quest to uncover the themes that shape a young person’s life. While James and Alyssa definitely have social issues, there are reasons behind their actions that the writers take their time to reveal. Their road trip of crime and mayhem is a representation of what it looks like for teenagers discovering what it means to be adults. There seems to be a proficient understanding from the writers that people are complex, and that not all of their actions can be explained with a single line of dialogue.
