Supergirl: "Legion of Super-Heroes" Review

As Supergirl begins the second half of Season 3, the biggest thing the show has working in its favor is its main villain, Reign. Reign is exactly the well-rounded, fully realized antagonist this series had always been lacking in previous seasons. The challenge for the remainder of Season 3 is prolonging the Supergirl/Reign conflict for a few more months without letting the narrative lose all sense of momentum. The midseason premiere managed that by shifting the conflict in a more ensemble-focused direction.

In other words, this was the perfect week to give the Legion of Super-Heroes their full introduction. Mon-El and Imra have already been recurring players this season, but this week marked the debut of the team's resident super-genius Brainiac 5 (Defiance's Jesse Rath). Apparently Rath has the market cornered on playing handsome, eccentric white-haired aliens. Brainiac 5 immediately feels like one of the better additions to the show's supporting cast this season. Rath plays him pretty much like your stereotypical Hollywood autistic genius, but it's an approach that meshes well with the rest of the main cast. In particular, Brainiac struck up a fun dynamic with Kara, who clearly doesn't know quite what to make of this arrogant know-it-all.
