The X-Files: "This" Review

The X-Files rebounded from last week's chaotic trudge of a premiere in a spirited, energized way with "This" - an entertaining, on-the-lam chapter featuring Mulder and Scully (and an orbiting Skinner) as a smart, sassy investigative unit looking into a transmission from a long-dead Langley (Dean Haglund) while dodging bullets and uncovering a plot tenuously tied to some of the seeds planted in the premiere.

There was a caper quality to "This" - written and directed by Glen Morgan - but the comedy never tipped us over the edge into "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster" (which was a brilliant chapter and the best part of Season 10, don't get me wrong). This was a finely balanced installment with intrigue, action and laughs. And the way it used the past (Lone Gunman) to inform the present (Barbara Hershey's Erika Price and her plot to save humanity by creating a virtual world to exist off-Earth) was a nice reminder of the types of stories this series should be doing in 2018. It also meant that parts of the overloaded "My Struggle III" could continue on and not get dropped for a full standalone.
