At this point, Phoenix Resurrection seems destined to take its place alongside the many other disappointing X-Men events of years past. And improvements the series make sin terms of plotting in issue #3 are accompanied by a stark drop in visual quality. This is just one of those comics that seems doomed to take one step back for every step forward.
On the plus side, issue #3 is somewhat more successful than the previous two chapters when it comes to balancing the Jean Grey-centric and ensemble X-Men storylines. No longer wandering aimlessly across the globe in search of Phoenix-related clues, the X-Men have begun the hunt for their fallen comrade in earnest. That allows Matthew Rosenberg to bring another major player from Jean's past into play, resulting in a fun little reunion that also helps add further momentum to the narrative. Jean's own struggle continues to carry weight, particularly as the nature of her odd reality becomes more clear and her powers further rage out of control.
