Given the way The Flash’s fourth season has been playing out, it’s nice to at least have the occasional reminder that the series is still capable of recapturing that old magic. “Enter Flashtime” offered a much-needed return to form for a perpetually troubled series. And it did so not by focusing on the larger Clifford DeVoe conflict, but by simply delivering a great premise and pushing Barry Allen to his physical and mental limits.
One of the big challenges this season has been in finding new ways to challenge Barry now that his speed powers have become almost limitless. When you can effectively freeze time itself, it’s no longer enough to simply race against another speedster villain over and over. And for all Season 4’s problems, at least it’s generally succeeded in this regard. DeVoe in particular has been proof that speed only gets you so far when your enemy can still outthink you.
