Netflix's Extinction Review

Netflix’s Extinction is a science fiction “thriller” in description alone. An uneven pace and the dry performance from the lead actor subdues any sense of excitement. The film’s familiar premise – a man is tormented by a recurring nightmare that may or may not be a vision of the future – doesn’t do it any favors either. That said, taking it in as a whole, Extinction isn’t all that bad.

Directed by Ben Young, Extinction is centered on an engineer named Peter (Michael Peña) and his troubling dreams. Often depicting a war of sorts, with people being gunned down in the streets by an unseen force, his nights are never peaceful. Over time, Peter’s lack of sleep starts to affect his life; he suffers from black outs, alienates his friends and seemingly neglects his family. Eventually, at the urging of his wife Alice (Lizzy Caplan), Peter makes an appointment with a nearby clinic. The idea was to go speak to a professional (a physiatrist maybe) in hopes of ridding himself of the nightmares. Unfortunately, things don’t go as planned.
