Rumor: Next main Assassin's Creed game will release in 2017

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

It looks like 2016 is kicking off with a sense of uncertainty for the Assassin's Creed series. While Ubisoft has not issued a direct statement in regards to the series' future, there are reports emerging that AC may be taking a short break.

The reports have sprung up from Kotaku, which previously leaked the existence of Assassin's Creed Syndicate before it saw the light of day. Word is that the next game in the series (tentatively code-named "Empire") will not release until 2017, with NeoGAF compiling the anonymous posts purportedly made by an Ubisoft employee. Kotaku is matching these anonymous posts with its own sources to conclude that Ubisoft Montreal will be skipping 2016, especially in lieu of its previous effort, Assassin's Creed Unity, which released with numerous bugs and glitches.

At this time, nothing has been confirmed and this should only be taken as rumor. Shacknews has reached out to Ubisoft representatives for verification and comment. In the meantime, 2016 will not be entirely silent for Assassin's Creed. The spin-off Chronicles series is set to continue next week with the release of Assassin's Creed Chronicles: India and wrap up in February with Assassin's Creed Chronicles: Russia.
