Dawn of X: Fallen Angels #1 Advance Review

Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review for Fallen Angels #1, which will hit stores on Wednesday, November 13.

With the release of Fallen Angels #1, Marvel's initial Dawn of X lineup is now complete. It's impressive not just how neatly these six books intermingle, but how high the overall standard of quality is. Fallen Angels may not strictly be the most necessary X-book in terms of plot or world building, but it does add compelling new wrinkles to an already fascinating status quo.

Fallen Angels is another example of a Dawn of X book dusting off a classic title but applying a very different take. In this case, Fallen Angels only really shares a basic premise with the short-lived 1987 book of the same name. This, too, is a story about mutant outsiders struggling to find their place. In the era of Krakoa, the true outsiders are those mutants who can't accept a peaceful life in the new mutant nation. In particular, the book revolves heavily around Kwannon and her struggle to recover her autonomy and independence after years of having her body hijacked by Betsy Braddock.
