Venom #20 Review: An Essential Absolute Carnage Epilogue

It's a bit of a relief to be on the other side of the Absolute Carnage tunnel. While that storyline ranks among Marvel's better crossover events in recent years, it still suffers from that all too familiar flaw where the core miniseries tells a very straightforward, action-oriented tale. In this case, most of the deeper character work is reserved for tie-in books like Venom and The Amazing Spider-Man. Now that Venom is on its own again, it's free to tell a fuller and more cohesive story. And if there's any takeaway from issue #20, it's that Eddie Brock faces a very exciting and unpredictable future.

Even if you don't follow this series month-to-month, it's worth reading Venom #20 as an epilogue to to Absolute Carnage. This issue examines the aftermath of the crossover and how it affects Eddie, his son Dylan and even The Maker for good measure. Writer Donny Cates makes it abundantly clear that Knull's reawakening is only one of the major developments coming out of the crossover. This issue introduces significant new wrinkles to the mythology of the symbiotes and works to forge deeper connections between Eddie and The Maker. As fascinating a villain as this interdimensional Reed Richards is, his presence in the series has always felt a bit arbitrary. That changes in a big way now.
