No other series can rival South Park’s ability to weave comedic gold out of poop jokes. Scatological humor is basically baked into the series’ DNA thanks to Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo. It was also the secret ingredient of one of the most uproariously funny episodes ever in 2007’s “More Crap,” which was an intentionally lowbrow response to the series’ recent Emmy win. And now, 12 years later, it’s clear South Park is still the king of the hill when it comes to really bizarre yet really entertaining poop jokes.
Every so often, South Park flirts with returning to “the good old days,” when topical humor was less a concern than simply pushing the boundaries of good taste and seeing what wacky hijinks Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny could get into. “Turd Burglars” feels like the most concerted attempt yet at returning to that simpler era. Other than a few amusing references to Jedi: Fallen Order, there’s no real attempt at ripping inspiration from current news headlines. This episode doesn’t even really build on the rest of Season 23 other than that recurring joke where we all pretend South Park was canceled in Season 22 and the episode is presented as a spinoff.
