Moon Boy and Devil Dinosaur may not rank among Jack Kirby's most famous Marvel creations, but they've certainly endured over the decades. And now this partnership is taking a radically different form as Devil Dinosaur is dragged into the present-day Marvel Universe to form an alliance with a preteen girl named Lunella Lafayette. There's a lot to like in this charming first issue, though the Moon Boy/Devil Dinosaur mythology actually proves to be the weak link.
Lunella is easily the strongest element of this new series. She's cast as a young science whiz/inventor trapped in a precarious position. She's not superhumanly gifted enough to be a worthy candidate for something like the Future Foundation, but far too intelligent and talented to be wasting her days in the public school system. Thus, she taps into that same outsider vibe that so many great Marvel heroes do. She doesn't fit in among her peers. She has ambitious dreams that no one in her life seems very interested in helping her achieve. Even before factoring in elements like her latent Inhuman lineage and her love of tinkering with Kree artifacts, Lunella is already a very compelling lead character. It's a testament to the writing talents of Amy Reeder and Brandon Montclare that this new heroine stands out so quickly.
