Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
First off, apologies for this review going up a couple of days late due to the holiday. Now on to it!
This week’s Rebels had some huge visual connections to the original Star Wars (or Episode IV or A New Hope), as a rescue mission onboard an imperial ship had a lot of echoes of the Death Star sequences in that film. The familiar Imperial corridors, the gunners, the torture droid, our heroes dressed as Stormtroopers… There was a lot of nostalgia on hand here. And yeah, it was pretty on the nose, but it mostly worked.
What was cool was that it was a big visual tie-in to that first movie, while also being a big episode for two characters from completely different parts of Star Wars – the Rebels-created Kanan and The Clone Wars’ Captain Rex. Because the dramatic crux of the episode was the strained relationship between these two reluctant allies and how Kanan would finally make a big decision during a moment of truth, risking himself to go back and rescue Rex. And yeah, maybe he didn’t need to call him “friend” just yet (that felt a bit much), but the decision itself spoke volumes.
