Victor Frankenstein Review

You may know that Mary Shelley’s classic monster novel Frankenstein was actually called Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. And now director Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Push) and screenwriter Max Landis (Chronicle) are attempting to mine the “modern” part of that title for all it’s worth with Fox’s new film Victor Frankenstein. An uneven mix of comedy, horror, and buddy-action genres, Victor Frankenstein starts off as a fresh, fun take on the age-old tale that unfortunately wears out its welcome after a while... kind of like a reanimated corpse that’s begun to stink up the joint.

James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe star, respectively, as Frankenstein and his loyal assistant Igor. The film is essentially a prequel told from Igor’s point of view, detailing how Victor first discovers the hunchback with no name in a circus and saves him from the cruel existence he suffers there. Frankenstein names Radcliffe’s character after his dead roommate (there’s a grisly joke embedded here that I won’t spoil) and the two soon form a bond, a friendship, and a partnership, as it turns out this version of Igor is almost as brilliant as the iconic mad scientist. (It should be noted that there was no Igor in Shelley’s original book, so any liberties the filmmakers take with the character here are more than fair game.) And of course, very soon they get down to some monster-making.
