Batman #1 Review

Of DC's core superhero franchises, Batman is the one least in need of an overhaul for DC Rebirth. That's why it's been great to see that DC isn't attempting to reinvent the wheel. The relaunched Batman comic picks up right where Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo left off in the previous volume. This first issue doesn't offer a dramatically different take on the Dark Knight, but like Batman Rebirth #1 before it, it offers an early and enticing glimpse of what the new creative team can bring to the table.

It's interesting to compare 2011's Batman #1 to this issue and the differing approaches the two creative teams took in kicking off their respective books. Snyder and Capullo's Batman #1 was crammed with villains, both of the iconic variety and the new threat that was the Court of owls. This issue is squarely focused on Batman and his circle of allies. The "enemy" in this issue isn't of the costumed variety, but rather a crashing jetliner. As clever and resourceful as Batman is, can even he do anything to prevent the massive casualties that are sure to unfold when a plane crashes into the heart of Gotham City? King sets out to test his hero's limits in a new and exciting way in this issue. Seeing Bruce, Alfred and Duke pooling their heads and using a combination of advanced math and convenient Bat-gadgets to stave off the inevitable makes for a welcome change of pace from Batman stalking criminals through dark alleyways.
