Few modern writers have shaped the Batman franchise as much as Paul Dini. His work on Batman: The Animated Series alone is enough to earn him a spot in the pantheon. But Dini has also penned award-winning Batman comics (including Batman: Mad Love) and even written the first two (and best) video games in the Arkham series. Clearly there's a powerful connection between Dini and the Caped Crusader, and it's that connection that forms the basis of his most personal and emotionally charged Batman story.
Dark Night is an autobiographical story about a particularly troubled period in Dini's life. In 1993, he was brutally attacked and left for dead near his West Hollywood home. In addition to the physical toll the attack took on him, Dini struggled with the psychological aftermath and the challenge of continuing to write about Batman and his villains. So this graphic novel is less about Batman as a character and more about the idea of Batman and the hope he can inspire in those most hopeless moments.
