Civil War II #2 Review

It's just as well that Marvel released two chapters of Civil War II this month, because issue #2 isn't nearly eventful enough to sustain the story for an entire month. Even with the oversized Civil War II #1 and two different prologue comics already on the stands, the conflict is still very much in the gestational phase. That plodding pace doesn't inspire a great deal of confidence in Marvel's latest summer event comic.

Following the disappointingly underwhelming death of his best friend in issue #1, an enraged Tony Stark now takes it upon himself to kidnap Ulysses and determine for himself how the new Inhuman's power works. Naturally, neither the Avengers nor the Inhumans are happy about this unilateral move. But even by the end of this issue, readers will be left waiting for battle lines to be drawn and for other heroes to begin choosing sides. It's difficult not to compare Civil War II to its predecessor, which by the issue #2 mark had already clearly demarcated the battle and delivered that Internet-bending Spider-Man twist. It looks as though readers will have to wait until at least issue #3 for the actual war to begin.
