Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
The strongest, most-watchable parts of Hotel have involved Evan Peters' cruel and ruthless Mr. March - from his tale of demise back in "Chutes and Ladders" to his annual murderer's banquet in "Devil's Night." And with "Flicker," a decent mostly backwards-looking chapter involving the Countess' origin tale and the 2015 rise of a freakin' vampiric Rudolph Valentino (played by the recently killed off Finn Wittrock), March once again proved to be the key to most everything.
Gaga's portrayal of the Countess hasn't exactly been a boon for this season. Headlines were written when she as cast, and she certainly holds name value, but the macabre majesty of that character tends to vanish whenever she opens her mouth. I'm not suggesting anyone could really replace (or succeed) Jessica Lange as the nucleus of this show, but every tendril of the Countess' storyline suffers because she's rather bland.
