At this point All-New, All-Different Avengers has overcome some of its early missteps and built up a fairly compelling cast of veteran heroes and rookie upstarts. The series' big challenge now is delivering villains and challenges worthy of that cast. The book still has a ways to go in that regard.
Issue #5 culminated with the underwhelming revelation that the mysterious "Qeng Dynasty" that's been alluded to over the past year is actually the "Kang Dynasty." Rather than building up new threats for a new Marvel Universe, this series seems content to recycle one of the most overused Avengers foes. One of the best, to be sure, but overused nonetheless. Mark Waid's new take on Kang doesn't leave a particularly strong impression. The villain spends most of this issue pontificating about his master plan. Even the fact that Spider-Man calls him out on this supervillain trope doesn't change the fact that new Kang is a little too much like the old version.
