The Dark Knight III: The Master Race #3 Review

DKIII is at its best when it focuses on being a Batman story. Issue #2 got a lot of mileage out of the Carrie/Bruce dynamic, even as it became apparent that the story Carrie was telling of Bruce's painful final days wasn't completely trustworthy. That appeal remains in issue #3, which is the first to focus on Bruce's point of view in the conflict. Brian Azzarello and Frank Miller's script offers a heartfelt glimpse into the mind of a man accepting that he's finally grown too old for the job and beaming with pride at the accomplishments of his successor.

These moments are when Andy Kubert's art is at its best. Kubert hones in one the small details, whether it's the strain on Bruce's face or the intricate network of scars on his hands. This series may not replicate the dense, 16-panel grids of the original, but the flip-side is that Kubert and inker Klaus Janson are able to zoom in more and give the story a more intimate scope.
