In an extremely surprising move, Ubisoft has announced that its third-person shooter The Division is nixing microtransactions.
Community manager Natchai Stappers advised a fan inquiring as to the nature of The Division beta's "Phoenix Credits," which it seems will be available only through in-game play exclusively:
@Tovarisc_ There will be no microtransactions, and definitely no P2W

What the "Phoenix Credit" system is, exactly, wasn't explained further, with Stappers commenting that Ubisoft is going to detail it further at a later date. Originally Ubisoft managing director David Polfeldt had commented that the game would "definitely" feature microtransactions, but since creative director Magnus Jansen struck that down in January, it appeard the lack of microtransactions would be official. There will be expansion packs in the future, but no microtransactions.
Now, I've heard legends about online multiplayer shooters where there aren't microtransactions, packs to buy, or anything like that, but I've not seen them with my own two eyes. Like a movie trailer without clichés, I'm more inclined to believe they just don't exist in this era.
I hear tell that, like games of old, you can play them without others buying souped-up weapons and rocketing their way to the top. I can't confirm this just yet and I don't want to say it's true, but it sounds absolutely wonderful (I'm joking, before anyone actually thinks I've never played a game like that, this is hyperbole).
