Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
So as a westling fan (and someone who covers wrestling for IGN), "Beyond the Mat" (named after the curtain-dropping 1999 documentary) was almost tailor made for me. Oh, it wasn't anything more than a detour episode, but I still got a phenomenal kick out of it. It did little to advance the main seasonal plot, save for Crowley escaping Casifer's clutches in the end, but there was still plenty of fun to be had.
Firstly, Sam and Dean's (mostly Dean's) nostalgic love of wrestling was a blast to watch. Jensen really seemed to be having a ball playing off Dean's fanboy admiration for the wrestling greats of his youth. Icons who were now relegated to the low-paying indie circuit. A world that came with its own "grinding" parallels between the wrestlers and the Winchesters. Those who put their bodies on the line for little-to-no glory.
