Nintendo 3DS price drop rumored for holiday 2016

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

The Nintendo 3DS is expected to receive a price cut this holiday season, according to an internal Nintendo of America document that was sent out to a large number of its employees.

The Nintendo 3DS price drop may come at an opportune time for the handheld as the company appears to be preparing for a big holiday season in terms of software releases. Hyrule Warriors Legends, Bravely Second, and Metroid Prime: Federation force are poised for a spring / early summer release, while 3DS versions of Dragon Quest VII and Dragon Quest VIII will be available in time for holiday 2016, the former of the two releasing this summer.

Nintendo appears to also be planning to release a Pokémon 20th anniversary game this holiday season. This is a big year for the franchise as it debuted its first Super Bowl commercial a few weeks ago, its original games are getting a re-release, Detective Pikachu graced the 3DS in Japan, and the company is preparing an all-Pokemon Nintendo Direct later this week. Hopefully we’ll learn more about this Pokémon 20th anniversary game during this week’s event.

Unfortunately, the document doesn't state which version of the Nintendo 3DS will receive a price drop. Considering the New 3DS XL launched in North America in January 2015, we'd be surprised if it was being considered for a price drop and not the older Nintendo 3DS.
