Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Always Sunny storms into 2017 with one of its most ambitious, and jumbled, episodes to date with "The Gang Turns Black" - a funny chapter that may have tried to combine too many elements. Though, perhaps by design, the clutter was meant to pre-diffuse some of the tension regarding the topic of race relations here. Because in one episode we had a bit of button pushing on the bigotry front, an entire musical component, and then a sidebar of Quantum Leap (or was it body switching?) featuring guest star Scott "Don't Steal Our Leap!" Blacula Bacula.
Again, as I think I've written about in more recent episode reviews, this is the type of thing Sunny should be doing at this stage in the game. We're twelve seasons in and the show is trying new things. This is good. Though considering how often shows dip their toes into the musical well after "X Amount" of seasons, Sunny actually feels late getting here. But recent seasons have given us chapters like "Being Frank," "Charlie Work" and more, if I were to just name two examples of the series going for broke, changing the format and risking the outcome. "Being Frank" didn't land quite right while "Charlie Work" was exceptional. Both were also instances of challenging storytelling and so it's nice to see that no one here is getting lazy.
