I love Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher for many reasons, but chief among them is that the series serves as a giant love letter to America and all the possibilities it holds. The fact that neither Ennis nor Dillon were born in the US shows that sometimes you need an outsider to properly put things in perspective. That's very much the driving force of Marvel's latest Avengers comic. U.S.Avengers features a British writer, a Brazilian American protagonist and an eclectic team of heroes united only by their shared love for America. The combination of good-natured, G.I. Joe-style patriotic excess and hope for a brighter future helps elevate what might otherwise have been a very formulaic first issue.
