Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of the first episode of APB, which premieres on FOX Monday night.
APB is basically what you get when you throw Iron Man and RoboCop in a blender and then strain out most of the fancy sci-fi tech and social satire. What you're left with is a show that's mildly entertaining in a "turn off your brain" kind of way, but one that's poorly equipped to be tackling thorny subjects like the crime epidemic in Chicago.
Hot on the heels of CBS' Pure Genius, APB is the latest procedural drama about a benevolent billionaire who sets about proving that money and resources are all that are needed to cure society's ills. Justin Kirk (Weeds) stars as Gideon Reeves, a very Tony Stark-esque character who bedazzles the world with his game-changing drones and his charismatic personality. After witnessing the murder of his best friend, Reeves pressures his way into taking over the Chicago PD's embattled 13th District and revamping it with the very best gear and computer systems money can buy. Natalie Martinez (Under the Dome) plays Amelia Murphy, a no-nonsense cop who quickly becomes Gideon's closest ally in the ongoing fight to win hearts and minds both within the department and without. The series also features Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) as the skeptical Sgt. Ed Conrad, Caitlin Stasey (Reign) as civilian tech whiz Ada Hamilton and Nestor Serrano (24) as Chicago's mayor and Gideon's new adversary.
