Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Rick wanting to fight back against Negan and the Saviors, and being smart enough now to know that it'll take more than he has to get the job done, is a good thing. "Rock in the Road" though, Walking Dead's midseason return episode, was fairly light on drama and thrills.
Don't get me wrong, I'll always sit and watch a herd of zombies get sliced the hell up by a metal cable. That's just common sense. And it was quite the sinew-y spectacle. But no one was dying this week. You could tell. The pacing of this season pretty much placed the most impactful deaths back in October and then settled us in for a dry spell. Unlike last year's midseason premiere, which was a total bloodbath, this episode wasn't going to take out another member of Rick's team while he was in the middle of formulating a plan and trying to win over allies.
