The League of Extraordinary Gentleman by way of American legends, Adam Glass and Pat Olliffe’s first Rough Riders series offered a who’s who of historical hijinks, pitting the likes of Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Houdini against a collection of the United States’ greatest threats. Their follow-up, Rough Riders: Riders on the Storm #1 continues with that initial conceit, though in a way that invites new eyes to join the fray.
Solicits bill Riders on the Storm #1 as being both a sequel to the original series and a new-reader friendly jumping on point, and writer Glass’ script does a solid early job of delivering on that balance. Whereas the original mini showed the fledgling Riders– comprised of such historical icons as Roosevelt, Houdini, Jack Johnson, Thomas Edison and Annie Oakley—just coming into their own, this new series has them well on their way to becoming the legends we remember today. Houdini has graduated from street level illusionist to marquee headliner. Mobster Monk Eastman is walking the respectable path—allegedly— as a pet shop owner. And in the book’s driving hook, Roosevelt is forced into the highest position of the nation following a shocking assassination attempt on President William McKinley. There’s a lot going on, and Glass very cleverly uses the various instances as a way to update his characters for past readers while also bringing those new to the series up to speed.
