The Red Turtle Review

There is a distinct challenge in writing about director Michael Dudok de Wit's animated feature, and Oscar nominee, The Red Turtle. Any synopsis of the movie that goes beyond the briefest of paragraphs could easily reduce the magic experienced by those watching the movie for the first time. Similarly, talking about various other aspects of the film (sound, color, music, etc.) and using the wrong examples to ground that discussion could, again, lessen the magic, and The Red Turtle is indeed magic. Pure magic.

So, what's it about? A solitary man is lost at sea, but manages to make his way to an island. Upon exploring the island, this man, never named, finds he is the lone human inhabitant but that many other creatures exist around him. As with any number of movies with a similar starting point, our hero must find a way to survive on the island and, potentially, make his way off of it.
