Final Fantasy 14 turns the 'Gears of Change' today

Here we go, the latest and greatest from Shacknews...

At the end of January, Square Enix teased the next content update for Final Fantasy XIV. That patch is now ready, as Square Enix has unleashed the 'Gears of Change,' featuring a slow of new content for anyone that owns the Heavensward expansion.

A new series of main scenario quests have been added, including the titular 'Gears of Change' quests. These quests revolve around the goal to unite man and dragon and those that would resist such change. The conflict in Heavensward reaches a fever pitch in this latest batch of missions, which are available to anyone with the big 3.0 expansion.

New trials are also being added, including one for eight players at level 60 or higher. Containment Bay S1T7 sees a monolithic entity called Sephirot (not to be confused with Sephiroth, of course) break free of its chains and challenge parties, along with its cohorts. Assuming players can withstand the giant's initial attack, they must prepare for the creature to become even bigger before launching another all-out assault. Other new dungeons, like The Antitower and The Lost City of Amdapor, are also being made available. Watch out for that latter one, though, because it's a Hard dungeon.

If the many additions and massive monstrosities of Final Fantasy XIV are proving intimidating, Square is debuting the Hall of the Novice for all users. Those at level 15 or better can find the Hall of the Novice in Western Ls Noscea, just north of the Chocobokeep. As its name implies, this area will teach players the fundamentals of combat and the basics of working in tandem with parties. Seasoned veterans looking to refine their higher-level skills will also find a new training area, referred to as 'Stone, Sky, Sea.'

Square is also preparing for an upcoming PvP event, sowing the seeds for The Feast, which is set to launch in a couple of weeks with Patch 3.21. There's much more to the 'Gears of Change' patch, including new Beast Quests, side missions with the comically-dapper Hildbrand, new enemy types, new recipes, new hairstyles, and beyond. For an idea of what to expect, check out the patch notes and watch the eight-minute video below.
