Batman may not be an entirely consistent series, but its highs make for some of the best reading you'll find on the stands right now. Batman #14 is a perfect reminder of that fact. This issue banks heavily on the Batman/Catwoman dynamic that was such a treat to read in the "I Am Suicide" story arc, proving just how much more depth there is to explore there.
While this issue is the first of two Catwoman-centric chapters filling the gap in between "I Am Suicide" and "I Am Bane," it also functions as a purely standalone story. Following their successful mission in Santa Prisca, Batman is faced with the knowledge that he has to send his lover back into custody to face justice for her 237 counts of murder. Batman wants her to go quietly and accept a plea deal. She wants nothing more or less than one final night of freedom with her favorite playmate. What follows is a a very sparse but also very beautiful examination of their complicated relationship. As the two beat up criminals, stage a heist and confront the ever-mounting sexual tension, writer Tom King once again gets to the heart of their romance and what makes their connection so powerful. This issue manages to be both romantic and wistfully sad, which is pretty much the Batman/Catwoman romance in a nutshell.
