Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
This crossover turned into quite the emotional rollercoaster. What started as an opportunity for wacky hijinks and Nazi-punching has now morphed into a breeding ground for some of the most depressing and the most uplifting moments in Arrowverse history. I don't know that "Crisis on Earth-X" made the most of the Earth-X setting in the end, but it sure gave us a nonstop stream of great character beats.
Above all, this crossover completed the big sendoff to Victor Garber's Martin Stein. Sadly, that sendoff went in a much darker direction than expected. Even with "Part 3" ending with Stein being shot, it seemed hard to imagine the writers would choose to sacrifice the character and deny him the happy, quiet retirement he's been working towards all season long. Part of me would have been content knowing Stein was still out there, bonding with his family and remaining free to join up with the Legends again should the need ever arise. But alas, it's not to be.
