Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
Given how long The Walking Dead has been running, and the "one long movie/battle" aspect of the Season 8 episodes so far, it's easy to feel like things are in a rut. When things feel stagnant, when there's a "sameness" from week to week, one looks for something, anything, out of the ordinary to spike the story. This week, in "The Big Scary U," we got that, though it still didn't save the chapter from focusing way too much, and giving way too much screen time, to characters we don't know or care about.
Gregory, Simon, Regina, any of the strife in the Sanctuary - it was all more or less a placeholder. Sure, Dwight could get caught being the mole for Rick's team, but do we necessarily care about that after he shot Denise in the eye with crossbow bolt? Or do we care if Eugene accidentally takes the fall for Dwight because he's everyone's easy pick for the person undermining Negan's plans? We really didn't need this intense of a peek inside the Sanctuary right now - even if it was trying to graciously show us the other side of the conflict (along with the actual meeting that was happening when Rick rolled up with his "hillbilly armor").
