Doomsday Clock #1 Review

Note: this is a spoiler-free advance review of Doomsday Clock #1, which will be released on Wednesday, November 22. I'll do my best to avoid all but the most basic plot details. But if you're worried about being spoiled, just know that it's well worth your time to hunt down a copy of this comic on Wednesday.

No doubt many comic book fans are opposed to the very existence of Doomsday Clock. Watchmen is one of the most revered comics ever published. It's about as close to a sacred cow as the superhero genre has, and the idea of trying to craft a sequel (without the involvement of the original creative team, no less) must seem like sacrilege to some. It's not as if the Before Watchmen prequel line did much to justify its existence. But if DC is going to continue to the Watchmen saga, better they do so with a story that matters. Not something that coasts by on the reputation of and nostalgia for the original, but a story that finds something legitimately meaningful in the intersection of the DC and Watchmen universes. Doomsday Clock shows every sign of being that story.
