DC's Legends of Tomorrow: "Helen Hunt" Review

One of the great things about Legends of Tomorrow: Season 3 is that the show never just settles for doing “random historical field trip of the week” episodes anymore. Everything contributes to the larger narrative in some way or another. There’s always room for a little character growth amid all the wacky shenanigans. “Helen Hunt” may not have blended these disparate elements quite as well as some episodes (last week’s Return of the Mack,” for instance), but it still served as another memorable romp for the team.

This is one of those cases where you pretty much have to love the episode based on its title alone. It’s clever, but also very appropriate. The premise also allowed the writers to work Helen of Troy (Pain & Gain’s Bar Paly) into the mix in a fitting way without necessitating the expense of recreating ancient Greece. Miss of Troy fit very naturally into the old-school Hollywood setting and the system of warring studios that weren’t so different from Greek city states at the end of the day. Early on, it was enough simply to soak in the sights and savor the show’s celebration of that long-gone era. Elements like the old-fashioned title card and the cameos by various real-life Hollywood players (such as Andy Robinson’s Cecil B. DeMille and Celia Massingham’s Hedy Lamarr) added to the fun.
