Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
For all that Arrows loves the flashback formula (or did, up until the current season), flashbacks have never gotten much play on the various other Arrowverse shows. “Midvale” is a perfect example of why that is. Whatever momentum Supergirl’s third season has managed to generate over the past month came to a screeching halt in this bland, unremarkable trip down memory lane.
It’s generally not a great sign when the most memorable moment of the episode is a reference to a completely different DC show. Granted, it was pretty cool to not only hear Smallville’s Chloe Sullivan name-dropped (complete with a mention of her “Wall of Weird”), but for her to play an unseen but critical role in the story. DC tried to have Chloe catch on in the comics a while back, but she never really stuck around. It’s nice that she hasn’t been completely forgotten.
