Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.
“Phone Home” might have officially qualified as Legends of Tomorrow’s Halloween episode for Season 3, but horror was still very much in the air this week. “Return of the Mack” not only delivered more of the zany fun that makes this show such a joy to follow, it managed to balance that with a more plot-driven conflict. The overarching conflict for Season 3 is finally taking clear shape, and the future is looking bright for the series.
It’s interesting to note the huge contrast between the early portions of this episode and what it eventually morphed into. Early on, “Return of the Mack,” seemed like it was striving to be nothing more or less than a silly romp through Victorian London. Which would have been perfectly fine by me. Rip Hunter’s surprise return in that opening scene set a nice tone for the conflict to come, promising a riff on Jack the Ripper with a dash of Sherlock Holmes and a generous helping of time-travelling vampires for good measure.
